I “Carpathian Herding” International Conference. Thursday, the 24th of October, shepherding societies representatives’ from Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine took part in the meeting held in Zakopane. Among almost 200 guests, there were: shepherds from Carpathian countries, representatives of national and local governments, as well as environment preservation institutions, and science experts. During plenary sessions, participants discussed crucial issues concerning re-establishing traditional Carpathian shepherd economy. The importance of shepherding for Carpathian economy and culture, legal aspects allowing the shepherding economy to be part of farming and food industries, landscape changes, and the fundamental role of shepherding for Carpathian biodiversity preservation (also in context of Carpathian Convention resolutions)were the main subjects brought up for discussion. The audience gave a well-deserved standing ovation to Piotr Kohut – shepherd from Koniaków, the president of “Pasterstwo Transhumacyjne” Foundation and the organizer of “Carpathian Sheep Transhumance 2013”. At the end of the conference day, to foster shepherding traditions, the participants had a chance to watch typical Carpathian mountain lander performances.
