“Carpathian Mountains at the heart of Europe” conference and inauguration of the Carpathian Sheep Transhumance 2013 On May the 10th, the “Carpathian Mountains at the heart of Europe. Using existing instruments of cooperation to secure sustainable development of the region" conference took place, in Romanian Parliament, in Bucharest. It was organized by Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Romania, under the Polish leadership in Visegrad Group. National and regional representatives from Carpathian countries participated in this meeting. Also, Marek Szczygieł- the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Romania, Valeriu Stefan Zgonea (President of the Chamber of Deputies in Romania), Stanisław Karczewski (Deputy Senate Marshal of Poland), and Marcin Kubiak (the Undersecretary of State in Polish Ministry of Regional Development) were present. The representatives of the “Carpathians Unite” project also attended the conference. The presentation by Zbigniew Niewiadomski (UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre) focused on the Carpathian Convention, the “Carpathians Unite” project, and the Carpathian Sheep Transhumance 2013. Moreover, during the conference, the Carpathian Sheep Transhumance 2013 was inaugurated, since it was officially starting the day after, in Ratbov. On May the 11th, 300 sheep led by a group of shepherds, have officially begun their 1200 kilometers trip through Carpathians in Romania, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic. Its ending is planned for September the 14th. The tradition of pastoral wandering comes from Vlachian shepherds, who used to take same Carpathian trips. The Carpathian Sheep Transhumance 2013 is a project held by Foundation “Pasterstwo Transhumacyjne”. The initiative was undertaken by the shepherds themselves, as well as by local municipalities and non-governmental organizations. Many different events will take place along the Transhumance route.
